4.46am: [co.uk] Finally some good news, of a sort. Tepco says that its Fukushima Daini nuclear plant and its four reactors have all been successfully closed down. After the earthquake and tsunami the number 2 plant had cooling problems but they seem to have been solved.

Japan's prime minister says radiation levels are significantly higher around the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The risk of nuclear leaks was rising at the nuclear plant, Kan said in a televised statement.
• Nuclear plant operator Tepco reported an explosion at the plant's No 4 reactor, followed by a fire. Tepco called on Japanese and US military to put out the blaze, which may have affected spent nuclear fuel stored in the reactor.
• The Japanese government has imposed a no fly zone over the 30km radius from the Fukushima plant site. Most staff have been told to leave the site as radiation levels soared to dangerously high levels around the plant.
• Residents have been evacuated from a 20km radius of the Fukushima plant, while those within a 30km radius of the plant have been told to stay indoors and seal doors and windows.
• Low-level radioactive wind from the damaged reactors could reach Tokyo later this evening, based on current winds, while scenes of panic in the capital have been reported after minute amount of radiation were detected in Tokyo.

Als abschreckendes Beispiel für spin-doctoring hier der US-Teapartist. Es ist nicht alles falsch, was er sagt, es ist diese verwirende Melange, die er erzeugt und die einen korrumpierenden Effekt auf die Urteilskraft der Zuschauer hat.
Es kommen sicher keine einfachen Zeiten auf uns zu - wir werden jede Faser unseres Verstandes brauchen.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Tuesday strongly criticized Tokyo Electric Power Co. for its handling of the earthquake-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
''The TV reported an explosion. But nothing was said to the premier's office for about an hour,'' a Kyodo News reporter overheard Kan saying during a meeting with executives of the power company at its head office. ''What the hell is going on?''
Kan strongly ordered the company not to withdraw its employees from the power plant, which has been facing a series of problems since Friday's massive quake, ranging from explosions to radiation leaks.
''In the event of withdrawal from there, I'm 100 percent certain that the company will collapse,'' Kan said. ''I want you all to be determined.''
The government, as well as the public, has been dissatisfied with the company's way of releasing information regarding the crippled nuclear plant.
In an attempt to work more closely together, the government and the company launched Tuesday a joint headquarters of the crisis involving the Fukushima No. 1 plant.
The headquarters set up at the company's head office is headed by Kan, with industry minister Banri Kaieda and TEPCO President Masataka Shimizu serving as its deputy chiefs.
Erst am Dienstag ein gemeinsames Hauptquartier von Regierung und Betreiber einzurichten dürfte den PM irgendwann teuer zu stehen kommen. Seine Äusserungen zeigen die schiere Überforderung. Japan steht vor einer existenziellen Bewährungsprobe. Japan wird alle Kräfte auf sich selbst fokussieren und als Stabilitätsfaktor in der Region ausfallen.
Interessant ist wie Japan den Wiederaufbau finanzieren wird - dies wird auch Auswirkungen auf die Schuldner und Gläubiger Japans haben.

With the United States poised to expand nuclear power after decades of stagnation, it will be important to reassess safety standards. Some 30 American reactors have designs similar to the crippled reactors in Japan. Various reactors in this country are situated near geologic faults, in coastal areas reachable by tsunamis or in areas potentially vulnerable to flooding. Regulators will need to evaluate how well operators would cope if they lost both primary power and backup diesel generators for an extended period.
This page has endorsed nuclear power as one tool to head off global warming. We suspect that, when all the evidence is in from Japan, it will remain a valuable tool. But the public needs to know that it is a safe one.

Ich fand es von Anfang an albern, nur von der Stufe 4 zu sprechen. Skala 7 heißt: "Schwerste Freisetzung, Auswirkungen auf Gesundheit und Umwelt in einem weiten Umfeld, Gesundheitliche Spätschäden über große Gebiete, ggf. in mehr als einem Land." Das ist wohl gegeben. Zumindest Stufe 6: "Erhebliche Freisetzung, voller Einsatz der Katastrophenschutzmaßnahmen". Spätestend mit der Evakuierung war das doch klar. Das kann man als bewusste Täuschung durch TEPCO ansehen, aber die Firma ist jetzt eh pleite. Auf die öffentliche Demütigung der Manager in Japan darf man sich freuen, eine schöne Tradition dort.
Bis zum Wochenende wird sich die Lage beruhigen, dann wird kräftig ausgemistet. Schlimm für Japan, gut für Deutschland. Erst mal 7 AKWs weg, freie Fahrt für die Erneuerbaren und für kommunale Energieprojekte, Beginn der Zerschlagung des deutschen Stromkartells. Das nur meine Einschätzung.
