  Sie wird weltweit fast ebenso oft gegoogelt wie der amtierende US-Präsident, in den Staaten übertrifft sie ihn bei der Anzahl der Google-Suchen deutlich. Und der Vergleich des Interesses an ihr mit dem an ihren zukünftigen Gegnern ist wie der Vergleich zwischen einem X-Wing und dem Todesstern. Google spuckt diese Grafik aus:

  

  Eine solche Diskrepanz im Ausmaß des (nicht notwendigerweise wohlwollenden) öffentlichen Interesses  dürfte es vor einer Vorwahlsaison noch nie gegeben haben.

  Ms. Palin may not be the front-runner in a traditional sense (although it’s not clear that any of the other candidates are either). But she literally commands as much of the public’s attention as the President of the United States, and the strategy for the other candidates will have to revolve around her to some significant degree.

  Das konservative Magazin "Weekly Standard" brüstete sich in der Vergangenheit gern damit, Sarah Palin "entdeckt" zu haben. Man hatte die damals noch kaum bekannte Gouverneurin Alaskas auf einer Kreuzfahrt des Magazins an Bord begrüßt und von da an in den wärmsten Tönen über sie geschrieben. Umso erstaunlicher, dass dieses Magazin jetzt einen ziemlich beißenden Verriss ihrer neuen Fernsehserie veröffentlichte.

  Der konservative Publizist (und ehemalige Redenschreiber für G.W. Bush) David Frum schlussfolgert, dass dem Establishment langsam mulmig werde angesichts der Frau, der sie die Rolle zugedacht hatten, die Basis zu mobilisieren, die sich aber längst ihrem Einfluss entzieht.

There really is a GOP party establishment. That establishment took up Palin as a useful tool in 2008, deployed Palin as an edged anti-Obama weapon in 2009 – and is now horrified to see that they may have set in motion a force possibly too powerful to halt when its time has ended. The story of the behind-the-scenes struggle to squelch Palin – and her ferocious determination not to be squelched – will be the big GOP-side story of the coming year.

  Mike Huckabee hatte jüngst in einem Interview (mit einer Zeitung in Iowa) erneut bekräftigt, über eine Kandidatur nachzudenken, sagte jedoch auch, Sarah sei eine sehr starke Konkurrentin: "No question, she will be a very, very strong presence and force, if she gets in. You know, she may run away with it. And that’s one of those things everyone needs to be prepared for."

  Frum interpretiert das als klare Ansage an das republikanische Establishment: Palin muss in Iowa gestoppt werden und Huckabee selbst ist derjenige, dem das am ehesten gelingen kann. Er bemerkt, dass auch Huckabee bei den arrivierten Konservativen nicht sehr beliebt sei, dass sie ihn aber möglicherweise brauchen werden, um Palin zu stoppen.

  Huckabee’s words are more than an observation. They are a warning. And they are a warning especially to be heeded because they come from the one politician who can probably do most to stop Palin, the candidate best positioned to win Iowa.

  Huckabee himself is also persona non grata with party leaders, because of his repeated criticism of Wall Street and Wall Street minded GOP insiders.

  But Huckabee is a very different cat from Sarah Palin. He’s smart and policy-minded. And while he expresses a strong social conservative message, he does not play the politics of division, disparagement, and resentment in which Palin specializes. In the days of party conventions, the answer to the Palin problem would have been obvious: party leaders would assemble and force the mutually mistrustful Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee onto the same ticket. In modern times, the game is played differently, but the structure of the situation remains the same: an early Huckabee pact with a candidate acceptable to Republican donors (if not Romney, then Tim Pawlenty or even Jeb Bush) would command enough clout to push Palin off the stage. If not, all bets are off. As I think about it, that’s one of the big problems with the candidacies of a Thune, a Daniels or a Barbour: They will need Huckabee as much or more than Romney does. Yet Huckabee is also a re-elected governor, plus he won the second largest haul of delegates last time. Why should he defer to any of the lower-polling governors? And who will make him?

  Mit viel Glück können die Raketen Nordkoreas Alaska erreichen. Sicher ist das aber nicht.

  Kein Wunder, dass ""la Palin" - Wiedergeburt Ronald Reagans - Schwierigkeiten hatte in 2008 zu verstehen, warum es zwei Koreas gibt.

  Oder sehen wir es nur falsch: Ist das ihre Vision ( a la Reagan) aus der ihre Kraft erwächst: aus dem Unverständnis heraus die Gegenwart zu transzendieren und die beiden Staaten endlich zu vereinen:

  Palin versteht in Wahrheit nicht, warum es zwei Staaten überhaupt geben muss!

   

  Mr. President, senden Sie Sarah Palin nach Nordkorea als Sonderbotschafterin!

  Machen sie ein Ende!

  Derweil gibt es den ersten Wahlwerbespot zu den GOP-Vorwahlen im Fernsehen, in Iowa natürlich. Den dort auftretenden Fred Karger muss man sich allerdings wohl kaum merken, ist er doch offen schwul. Seiner Ansicht nach wäre es schon ein Erfolg, wenn er bei den Fernsehdebatten mittun dürfte.
